Three of my favorites ( in no particular order):
—Confederates in the Attic: Dispatches from the Unfinished Civil War by Tony Horwitz
—This Republic of Suffering: Death and the American Civil War by Drew Gilpin Faust
—The State of Jones: The Small Southern County that Seceded from the Confederacy by Sally Jenkins & John Stauffer
Each of these books provides a truly unique perspective and insight, as well as wonderfully fresh takes on this war. . .
In regard to local Rochester, NY history and the role its citizens played in the war a must read is Where They Fell: Stories of Rochester Area Soldiers in the Civil War by Robert Marcotte. The author is a phenomenal columnist for Rochester’s own newspaper The Democrat & Chronicle. Writing articles that focus on the history of Rochester of course.
